We stumbled upon Barclay's after our original choice, the Rockridge Diner, told us that they had run out of hollandaise sauce... (omg wtf!) Barclay's is pretty much a sports bar slash restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating that opens at 10am on the weekend and serves brunch... Sounds awesome right? It is! Barclay's clientele includes everyone from families with kids and crayons to soccer peeps shouting at the tv screens. However, it was father's day when we went, so the norm may include fewer families. Chances are, you won't feel out of place. Might I go so far as to say you will probably feel downright comfortable. It is located
here, which looks like Berkeley but is still technically Oakland. Oh and
here is their website.
This was to be my first blog entry and honestly I was a little too excited (ok I was way too excited... it's a blog about eggs benedict after all. What dork thought that up?) and I focused more on taking pictures than on the actual quality of the benedict.
I ordered their benedict sampler platter, which included one regular bene, one creole bene, and one california bene. I was really only in love with the regular. I think someone in the kitchen spilled a bottle of creole seasoning in the creole hollandaise sauce when it only called for a tablespoon or two, and was just crossing their fingers that no one noticed. The california benedict would have been frickin delicious if it had some ham on it. They replaced the ham with the avocado instead of just adding avocado... Who's idea was that? The regular bene was good. But it wasn't spectacular. It was just good.

All in all, it was a commendable eggs benedict. The whites were cooked, the yolks runny, someone here knows how to poach a good egg. The hollandaise sauce was a little thin but still flavorful. Me likey. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here just for the eggs benedict. However if I want to watch a game whilst eating said eggs benedict, (or if I was with someone that wanted to watch a game, cuz I really don't care) this is the spot. I'm pretty sure they only serve brunch on the weekends.
MMMMMMMM!!!!
ReplyDeleteWell if the eggs benedict were just mediocre, at least the quality of the camera work is impeccable!
